Going on a roadtrip is often quite an adventure, and it's even better when you can share it with other adventurers! So today, we're taking you on an adventure with Charlène for a weekend in a converted van in Brittany.

Vehicle: Dacia Dokker

Kit: Micro Camper Kit

Roadtrip duration: 3 days

Preparing the converted van

On a first roadtrip, the most delicate part is often the preparation of the vehicle, as we're often afraid of forgetting things that could be indispensable once we're there. That's what vanlife is all about: learning to live with just the essentials and returning to a simpler way of life.

Charlène shared her fears with us before the first departure:

"I'm afraid of running out of water for showering, washing up, hygiene, and especially for drinking... so we set off with 2 x 10 L and our two water bottles full.

Another thing I'm afraid of is the cold. We're going to Brittany at the beginning of May, and the weather forecast is fine but not hot. 🌥️
So we take our comforter and a plaid. 🛌

Last but not least, the dark and the noise to sleep scare me, I try to find a mask that I can't find 😞, we leave anyway with earplugs you never know."

💡 Tip: To make sure you don't run out of water, buy a water reserve, fill it up as much as you can before the trip and, like Charlène, carry two water bottles that you fill up before setting off.

Choosing an overnight spot in a converted van

"After a 3-hour drive, we finally arrived in Perros Guirrec. The first challenge was to find a nice spot for the night!
We're trying to find a parking lot with a sea view so that we're in the clear when we wake up and enjoy the scenery.

We spot a spot that looks pretty nice even if we have little visibility because it's just gotten dark. Unfortunately, we soon realize that there's a small problem with this spot: we're on a slope🎢.

The result? We're going to sleep leaning to the right, not easy ahah."

💡Tip: If you want to find a pretty nice spot without searching for hours, I'd recommend the Park4night app, it's really the essential app to have when you go on a roadtrip. On the app, you can find different spots with an indication of the different facilities present like water points, toilets etc....

Installing the bed in a converted van

Once the spotlight has been shone, the next step is to set up the sleeping accommodation in the converted van

And here, thanks to my super colleague Axelle who found me some curtains. So we set off with 3 curtains that we put up on the sides and back of the vehicle, the only problem being that there weren't enough for the front... We tried the towel solution, but it didn't work.

Result: plaid solution validated, it will be used as plaid and curtains during this roadtrip, top one product for two uses.

After making up the bed, we're ready for a good night's sleep, and we're hoping for a pretty view when we wake up in the morning!

Waking up in a converted van

The result of this first night in a converted van?

If I'm being completely honest, it wasn't the best night of my life: I woke up repeatedly, it rained even though the weather forecast was good (that's the scam - never believe what people tell you when they say the weather's going to be good in Brittany!) and, above all, the negative point is that we're still on a slope, which doesn't really make sleeping any easier (hence the repeated waking up).

But I can still take some positives from it :

- The curtains are top-notch and very blackout (useful for covering the first rays of sun).

- Feel safe inside the dokker converted into a converted van

- We have a sublime view of the sea

Activities in a converted van

We decide to get out of the car and go for a walk around the place where we arrived, but which we didn't get to see because it was already dark when we arrived. We discover a very pleasant seafront and nearby toilets, which can be very practical.

Once our stroll is over, we head back for breakfast on the water's edge, then on to the center of Perros Guirec, where we discover some very cute little stores, but the center isn't quite as nice as where we were before.

So we decided to change towns, this time heading for Ploumanac'h, which was voted France's favorite town in 2015. 😄
And it's easy to see why, when you visit the town - a superb town made unique by its large rocks - you continue your walk to the Lighthouse.

A little tired, we decide to leave this pretty town and head for Paimpol, where we'll find a spot for a siesta to make the most of the day.
We found an incredible spot facing the sea thanks to Park4night, a bohneur!

Cooking in a converted van

For dinner, I use the stove to cook our first hot meal of the trip! We had a couscous with a view of the sea, and it was quite a nice evening!

💡Tip: If you're apprehensive about using the various pieces of equipment such as the compression fridge or the stove, I'd advise you to do some tests before setting off on your roadtrip.
Sit back at home and test the accessories to make sure they're working properly!

Second day in a converted van

Discover new spots in a converted van

Today we headed for the island of Bréhat, and it was a wonderful discovery, falling under the spell of this wild, natural island. We covered a good number of kilometers to visit the island and enjoy the scenery, and it's fair to say that our legs were not spared 👟

Eating inside the converted van

Tonight, we're a little tired from the walk, so we decide to do some shopping and eat inside the converted van. To be able to eat inside the converted van, we simply removed the sheet covering the van's mattress so that we could separate the foams and take out the table. Honestly, I was worried that it might be a bit awkward to have to undo the bed to get to the table, but it's done pretty quickly and it's just a habit to get into!

On the menu tonight, pesto pasta with cheese and ham, a real treat 😋

💡Tip: To make organization easier, prepare a list of meals to make during your roadtrip, it can help.

Third day of roadtrip in the converted van

On this last day of our roadtrip, we had breakfast in Perros Guirrec and then headed for Paimpol to visit Beauport Abbey. And it was a real treat - I really recommend you visit this abbey if you're ever in the area. We opted to continue our walk up to the cliffs at the "pointe de la tour" and the little port of Plouah called Gwin Zegak.

What makes this port special?

The harbor is made up of piles (wooden posts) used to moor pleasure boats. This mooring technique dates back to the 5th century and has been used in the port of Gwin Zegak since the 19th century.

End of this trip in a converted van

On the way back, we decide to stop for pasta with pesto, but we run into a few difficulties... The slight seaside breeze makes it a little difficult to cook the pasta, and we're missing a folding screen (we'll have to add it to our to-do list for next time). 💨

Brittany roadtrip favorites :

  • The town of Ploumanac'h with its large rocks
  • The island of Bréhat with its wild nature
  • Beauport Abbey
